RELAXATION THROUGH MANTRA
Dr. Benson’s instructions to bring about the relaxation response involved using a mantra to shut off the thoughts of an active mind. The word one is an example of a simple mantra you can use. It’s a user-friendly version of mantras used by Transcendental Meditation practitioners.
Here’s a simple way to practice the relaxation response that Dr. Benson taught. It’s very short and easy to memorize. You can also go to my Facebook page to watch a video if you’d like to practice it with me (www.facebook.com/drmikedow).
Find a comfortable seated position and close your eyes.
Relax your muscles, starting with your feet and allowing the relaxation to spread all the way up to your head.
Breathe easily and comfortably through your nose, and mindfully become aware of the breath.
Attach a mantra like the word one to your breath as you say this word to yourself on each inhale and exhale. You can also choose another soothing word if you’d like.
Maintain a passive attitude so that relaxation unfolds at its own pace.
Continue for 10 to 20 minutes.2
